Schermerhorn Symphony Center
NCO

Brave Old World, klezmer band
George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue swings hard with New York City
jazz of the 1920’s, tinged with influences of his Jewish heritage.
Since the 15th century the secular Jewish folk music known today as klezmer
has been used to inspire celebration and dance.
These worlds will be brought together like only the NCO can for an evening
filled with wild, joyful and poignant music.

NCO
This program features the world premiere of Dr. Michael Alec Rose's Arguing with God - Concerto for Klezmer and Orchestra.
"Arguing with God strives to capture the joy, depth, and energy of Klezmer, whose richness is summed up so well in the name of our wonderful guest artists:
Brave is what the Jewish people must ever be in faithfully arguing with God.
Old is what the roots of our tradition are, made new in every generation.
World is that which we Jews are commanded to be a light unto."

Paul Gambill, conductor
Gilles Apap, violin
John Jorgenson, guitar
Laurence Kaptain, cimbalom
Three virtuoso soloists share the stage to bring to life the fiery music of the Gypsies, including a new work featuring the cimbalom, the national instrument of Hungary.
Composer-in-Residence David Balakrishnan’s new work for violin soloist draws inspiration from the origins of Gypsy music in the evocative rhythms and melodies of northern India.
The NCO concludes the season with a tour de force that was inspired by the exuberant dances of the Galanta Gypsies.
